Eco Bikes: Sun and wind harvesting bike is a portable powerhouse

Eco Factor: Renewable energy generating bicycle design.

Bikes are the greenest way to commute from one place to another. Being zero-emission and a healthy way to commute won’t be the only characteristics of biking in the future, when designers like Ben Lai are there to get more from the innocent two-wheelers. Ben is the designer of the most futuristic and green bike that we’ve seen so far. E.H.I.T.S, or Energy Harvesting Intermode Transport System, is what he likes to call his bike, which by all means is no less than a portable powerhouse.
The high-tech bike comes with features like an integrated RFID card reader to activate the bicycle lock and embedded GPS for better security. But what makes this bike the greenest is its ability to generate renewable electricity in not one but two forms. The hub-less wheels of the bike carry an incorporated wind turbine, that generates green electricity not only when the bike is moving, but also when it’s stationary.Apart from wind energy, the bike’s body is embedded with solar panels, which too like the wind turbine work all through the day. All the energy generated is stored in a battery pack installed near the pedals of the bike.

The Dark Side:

With all those tech-innovations in place, the bike is set to cost much more than your normal green ride. Moreover, the addition of all those features will make the bike heavy, something which you don’t want during a long ride

World's first Chainsaw Powered Motorcycle

Bikes are not our first love, but, we do love to discuss about luxury bikes, be it the MoonChoppers 18K Gold Chopper, 24K gold-plated Kawasaki ZX-636 or the beastly Chrysler Tomahawk V10 Motorcycle. Another unique addition to our unique bike collection is The Dolmette which is the world’s first chainsaw powered motorcycle. The motorcycle is powered by 24 DOLMAR chainsaw engines and it uses a 5-speed Harley-Davidson transmission by a series of twelve toothed belts to deliver 5.2 kW of power (7.1 PS) at 10,000 rpm. The deadly beast churns-out a top speed of 125 kW when all 24 engines are combined. Check-out YouTube video here.

2008 Victory Vision First Look

Victory says that it's okay if at first you look at this bike and ask yourself: "What the heck is that?" The Minnesota-based company describes its new Vision as "the most progressive American luxury-touring bikes ever built," and it's difficult to argue that point.

This is certainly no Electra Glide. In fact, the Victory Vision surely ranks up there with the unforgettable Honda Rune as the most forward-looking cruisers ever to have entered mass production. Victory reps boast that the Vision will be considered a landmark in the evolution of the motorcycle.

Victory Motorcycles is treading bold new ground in the luxury-touring market with this dramatically styled V-Twin cruiser. It's the culmination of more than six years of research and development after the initial market exploration in 2000. Twenty design sketches and hundreds of thousands of development miles later, the production Vision will arrive at dealers in autumn of 2007.

The Vision makes good business sense in a few key aspects. First is the bourgeoning popularity of the "bagger" segment. It's not only the fastest growing market among cruisers, it also represents the greatest value in terms of dollars spent.

The other significant market condition in favor of the Vision is the relative dearth of competition in the luxury-touring class. Beyond the aforementioned Electra Glide, the iconic Gold Wing and a few BMWs is an opportunity for a cushy touring mount brimming with comfort and convenience technology. And no one ever said a cruiser-based entry to the class had to look like a 40-year-old Harley.

Victory reps believe the Vision will be considered a landmark in the evolution of the motorcycle. The Vision Street (left) goes without the large top trunk of the Vision Tour (right).
Central to the design theme is the sculpting along the engine's forward cylinder that mimics the curves of Victory's distinctive scalloped fuel tank created by Victory's inspired designer Michael Song. In profile, the 50-degree Freedom V-Twin sits cozily inside the bodywork, like "a jewel in the setting." Similarly, the twin exhaust mufflers are nestled tidily in scooped slots under the locking, hard-shell saddlebags. The bike's nose has a bit of BMW R1200RT in it, while the shapely curves of the taillight area are like nothing else we've ever seen.

The Vision is actually two motorcycles based on the same platform. The full-boat version is called the Vision Tour, and its distinguishing feature is the generously sized topcase that is missing from its little brother, the Vision Street. The Tour version's 6,750 cubic inches of storage doubles that of the Street's. Both have roomy floorboards and low-maintenance belt drives.

Wind protection and airflow management, augmented by adjustable side wind deflectors, are claimed to be outstanding. A convenient electrically adjustable windscreen is optional. A 6.0-gallon fuel tank guarantees a 200-mile minimum range and also provides a location for the main stereo controls.

DUCATI MONSTER 1100

Ducati North America have announced the latest additions to its iconic Monster line of “naked” sport bikes, the Monster 1100 and 1100 S models.

The arrival of the new Monster 1100 and 1100 S models increases the displacement of the redesigned Monster family, which defines the naked motorcycle and has been staking its claim worldwide as the new icon of Italian excellence.

The 'less-is-more' philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati's never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles; but these new models have succeeded in being even more 'pared down' than their predecessors. The Monster 1100 weighs only 371 lbs (369 lbs for the S version), making it by far the lightest bike in its category.

The new Monster 1100 design perfectly balances sports performance, riding pleasure and stunning looks. With its single-sided aluminum swingarm, high-spec componentry, race-oriented chassis and 15 years of evolution, the Monster 1100 now takes its place at the head of the Monster family.

The Monster 1100 S is a pure concentrate of light weight, power, design and exclusivity. The 'S' features fully adjustable 43mm titanium nitride coated Ohlins forks and progressive Ohlins rear shock absorber with adjustable pre-load and return damping. Carbon fiber cam belt covers, silencer guards and front fender reduce weight by a further 2.2 lbs. The distinctive gold five spoke wheels of the Monster 1100 S give it the elegant style and same sporting look as historical Ducati race bikes.

Both versions of the new Monster 1100 come with removable single seat covers and neat micro-bikini fairings; and are powered by the charismatic two-valve 1100cc Desmodromic twin-cylinder engine that boasts 95hp at 7500rpm and an impressive 79.5 lb/ft of torque at 6000rpm

Super Luxury Motorcycles 2009

I think the titanium rr and the heretic are both killer looking bikes. Very cool imo. The first orange one it showed is ugly as sin however. I like a list where the second cheapest bike is the Desmosedici RR.

edit: Oh yeah, that BMW lowrider concept is absolutly awesome. I hope they make that, so friggin cool.

I am not much of one for a lot of chrome but this bike is sick. I would love to ride it and see how it compares to other bikes performance wise. Have any of you guys seen other bikes with the chain on the right

2007 Norge 1200 Moto Guzzi, That's Amore

One of my favorite writers, Susan Carpenter, the "throttle jockey" who writes for the LA Times, has delivered a review of the 2007 Norge 1200 Moto Guzzi sport-tourer motorcycle that might have you running to your dealer with dollars in your pocket. The Italian luxury bike is named as a tribute to the 3,700-mile trip Giuseppi Guzzi took to the Arctic Circle almost 80 years ago. It has a powerful air-cooled, four-stroke, 90-degree V twin engine and at 542 pounds is a substantial and sturdy bike. Carpenter took the bike for a spin in Malibu's Decker Canyon and found it a breeze on the twisting roads. The base price is $14,990.

Ducati Sport 1000 Mono Special Edition

The latest motorcycle from Ducati is one of the rarest from the Italian maker of premium bikes to hit the market in a while. There will be just 100 of the 2007 Sport 1000 Mono Special Edition sold in North America (10 for Canada and 90 for the U.S.) The Sport 100 SE has a black and gold paint scheme and is a single seat bike that has a limited edition numbered plaque located on the triple clamp. The motorcycle has a a twin muffler "shotgun" exhaust, spoke wire wheels and Brembo brakes and a 992cc dual spark motor. It sells for $11,495

MV Agusta Limited Edition Hydrogen and Wally Bikes

It's always interesting when companies collaborate, and it's no different in the case of Italian motorcycle maker MV Agusta joining forces with both the clothing manufacturer Hydrogen and the luxury boat company Wally. The resulting limited edition bikes are spin-offs of MV Agusta's Brutale 910 and are appropriately called the Hydrogen Brutale 910 R and the Wally Brutale 910 R. Each of the bike designs are unique while still maintaining the lines and beauty that make the Brutale the bike that it is. Only 100 of each model will be produced.

BMW Eyes Luxury Bike Market in India

BMW is interested in the high end bike market in India and is weighing its options seriously. It is planning a joint venture with the Hero Honda group to introduce high end luxury bikes in India. It intends to introduce the Motorrad range of super bikes in India. These bikes fall in the price range of Rs 10 lakh and above in IndiaOur people from BMW Motorcycle are having a look at the market. They are also in discussion with us for feedback on the matter. As soon as we see potential for a viable market entry for sustainable growth, we would take that into consideration,” said Peter Kronschnabl, president, BMW India.

The super bike market in India is extremely thin. Less than 500 super bikes sell in India annually but it is a great option for brand building in the country. BMW Motorrad is a brand used by the German company for its motorcycles, which are in production since 1923. However, any plans for this range of bikes will take at least two years before they make their foray in the Indian market.

Special Report- Honda and Bajaj Superbikes in India shortly

Eying a big potential for luxury bikes in India, where tastes are changing from mass-market machines to high-end bikes, Honda and Bajaj are looking at launching new sportsbikes in the country in the next couple of months.

There had been a sudden surge in the number of International Sportsbikes brands entering the Indian market, over the past two years. Initially the trend was set by Kinetic with the launch of the 250cc, v-twin-powered Hyosung Comet in India back in 2005. Then it was Yamaha, which launched the Yamaha R1 in India and the MT-01 cruiser in 2007. Soon later followed by the Italian motorcycle giant Ducati, who launched an array of superbikes costing up to almost 50 lakhs, and finally Suzuki joined the superbike bandwagon in late-2008, with its Hayabusa superbike and the Intruder cruiser.

Honda,Bajaj don’t want to be left out in the Superbike Race
Keeping with that trend, Honda and Bajaj don’t want to be left behind. Honda now intends to provide some competition to the Yamaha R1and the Suzuki Hayabusa by launching the Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade in India, in the first quarter of this year, and following will be a naked version of the bike (pictured below).

Honda also plans to launch the Honda CB1000R in India alongside it. Both bikes are expected to be priced at around Rs 9.5-10.5 lakhs, making them slightly cheaper alternatives to the R1 and the Hayabusa.

Italian Luxury Bikes Edit

The MV Agusta F4CC is a staggering sport bike developed by designer Massimo Tamburini along with Claudio Castiglioni, the director of MV Augusta.

Sleek, aggressive lines, a robust frame and unique details compose the bespoke one-off motorcycle. With every material hand picked and 90% of its components tailor made, the titanium and carbon fiber sport bike boasts a 200hp engine and an invigorating top speed of 195mph. And to match this impressive Massimo Tamburini design, each lucky owner will also receive a Girard-Perregaux Swiss watch along with a limited edition Trussardi leather jacket.

With only 100 models to hit the market, the hand-crafted motorcycle is intended for true sport bike enthusiasts; naturally, though, the richest among them. Dubbed the most expensive in the world, the MV Agusta F4CC will bear a price tag of 100,000 Euros, or approximately $130,000.

he F4CC was conceived by MV Augusta director Claudio Castiglioni himself and bears his initials. "I decided to put my name to this bike as I originally dreamed of it for myself,' he says. And with a kerb weight of 412 lbs., it costs twice as much per pound as a Ferrari. (mymodernmet)
